The SESC JAZZ FEST in São Paulo concluded its 2025 edition with a stellar grand finale led by the multi-award-winning Cuban artist, Aymée Nuviola, a Grammy and Latin Grammy winner. Known as «La Sonera del Mundo,» she captivated the Brazilian audience with her acclaimed show «Havana Nocturne,» a deep immersion into filin and the nighttime traditions of Havana.
The concert was a musical journey into the atmosphere of Havana nights in the 1950s and 1960s, a golden era that saw the rise of filin—a genre of Cuban romantic song that fuses vocal jazz with the bolero. Aymée Nuviola, one of the most distinctive voices in Latin music, demonstrated why she has forged an international career expertly spanning jazz, bolero, bossa nova, and classical music.
A Night of Filin, Bolero, and Jazz
The «Havana Nocturne» repertoire featured immortal classics from essential composers such as José Antonio Méndez, César Portillo de la Luz, Marta Valdés, and Meme Solís. With masterful interpretations of songs like Obsesión, Perfidia, and Vete de Mí, Aymée Nuviola successfully evoked personal stories and memories of her hometown, Havana, reaffirming her intimate connection with a genre she inherited from influences like Omara Portuondo and Elena Burke.
The show featured the brilliant musical direction of Paulo Simeón and the outstanding participation of pianist and master Kemuel Roig, whose execution and arrangements enriched every piece. The impeccable band accompanying Nuviola guaranteed a night of elegance, sophistication, and passion, receiving a standing ovation from the SESC JAZZ FEST audience.
«Sharing the essence of filin and the elegance of ‘Havana Nocturne’ with a knowledgeable audience like São Paulo’s at the SESC JAZZ FEST has been a career highlight. It is a celebration of the Cuban soul that resonates universally,» expressed Aymée Nuviola.
The triumphant performance not only put a golden seal on the festival but also solidified Aymée Nuviola’s status as a global ambassador for rich Cuban musical heritage and an indispensable figure in Latin Jazz.
